About Robert A Berry, PhD
I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist with 40 years experience in the mental health field. I am recently retired from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where I held a faculty position as an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. I have been in private practice for the past 35 years.
The word "therapy" comes from the Greek word "theraps" meaning, an attendant. The prefix "psycho" comes from the Greek word "psyche" meaning, soul or spirit. A good therapist attends or listens to the soul, spirit or innermost voice of the client or patient. Having worked in the mental health field for over 40 years, I have learned and developed a variety of approaches to listen to and attend to that part in each individual that has the potential to bring about understanding and healing from the deep psyche within. I also provide couples counseling, facilitating open honest direct communication through teaching/coaching empathic listening skills utilizing the Interactive Focusing Process.
I have formal training and certification in a number of approaches to therapy: Analytical Psychotherapy (Jungian), Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (Mood and Anxiety Disorders), Experiential and Humanistic therapy (Focusing and Person -Centered) and Art Psychotherapy. I relate to each individual according to their personal needs.
I am available to work in "brief concurrent therapy" with people who are already in treatment with a therapist and need specialty treatment ( e.g. Exposure Response Prevention for OCD, Prolonged Exposure for PTSD ) and also with individuals who are at a "stuck place" in therapy and want to continue working with their current therapist.
