Artist Bio:
After mastering the complex technical aspects involved in working as a model maker and high-end cabinet maker for clients in Manhattan, NY, Ernst Gruler decided to pursue fine art. He received both a BFA and Master of Arts degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI in 1989 and 1992, respectively.
The combination of technical mastery and creative design is evident in everything the contemporary furniture artist creates. Over the years, Ernst has developed a unique fabrication process, which involves bending wood laminates into architectural forms that look more like functional sculpture than traditional furniture. However, the chairs, tables, pedestals and lamps are not only beautiful designs, but are functional and durable as well.
The 55 year old artist brings precision and attention to detail to everything he does.
Arriving in Sedona in 2002, Gruler and his wife Blair Vaughn-Gruler opened Panara in Tlaquepaque. Gruler designed and fabricated all the showcases and display units for the new boutique, which he had also done for the couple’s four other boutiques in Michigan. After selling Panara in 2004, Gruler turned his attention to detail in creating Know Your Home LLC, a professional home inspection service. Drawing on is many years of experience with building, of both homes and furniture, Gruler has an understanding of how things should be put together to be functional, durable and aesthetically satisfying. With the home inspection busy and successful, Gruler is finding his art furniture in growing demand. Having exhibited at galleries across the country, including the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City, Gruler is excited to be creating and exhibiting in Sedona. He is represented by the Goldenstein Gallery in Sedona and Gilliam’s Gallery of Creative Design EsPosibile Gallery in north Scottsdale.
His wife Blair observes, “Everything Ernst does is of the highest quality. But, the art furniture is special because it is the culmination of many of his skills and talents, especially his wonderful sense of design. His designs bring fine art into everyday life. It is such a treat to live with his work!”
